Kunya Ark Fortress

The Kunya Ark Fortress is one of the oldest and most important historical monuments in Khiva, serving for centuries as the residence and political center of the rulers of the Khiva Khanate. Located inside the ancient city of Itchan Kala, the fortress functioned as a “city within a city,” containing royal residences, administrative buildings, courts, mosques, and military facilities.

The fortress was originally established in the 17th century and expanded over time by different rulers of Khiva. It became the heart of political and social life in the khanate, where important state decisions, ceremonies, and receptions were held.

Architecturally, Kunya Ark combines defensive military design with elegant palace architecture. The complex includes richly decorated courtyards, carved wooden columns, colorful tilework, and traditional Khorezm-style ornamentation. One of the most famous parts of the fortress is the summer mosque, known for its beautifully painted ceilings and intricate blue-and-white tile decorations.

The fortress also contains watchtowers and elevated platforms that provide panoramic views of Itchan Kala and the surrounding desert landscape. These viewpoints once played an important defensive role while also demonstrating the power of the khans of Khiva.

Today, Kunya Ark Fortress is one of the main tourist attractions in Khiva and an important symbol of the city’s royal and political history. Visitors come to explore its historic halls, admire its architecture, and experience the atmosphere of one of Central Asia’s most fascinating ancient fortresses.
