Islam Khoja Minaret
The Islam Khoja Minaret is one of the most elegant and recognizable architectural landmarks in Khiva. Built in the early 20th century, it is the tallest minaret in the city and a symbol of the final flourishing period of architecture in the Khiva Khanate.
The minaret was constructed under the patronage of Islam Khoja, an influential statesman and reformer who played an important role in the modernization of Khiva. The structure was built together with the nearby madrasa, forming a harmonious architectural ensemble within Itchan Kala.
Architecturally, the Islam Khoja Minaret is distinguished by its tall and slender shape, elegant proportions, and beautiful decorative tilework. The surface of the minaret is covered with bands of blue, turquoise, white, and brown glazed tiles arranged in geometric patterns, reflecting the traditional artistic style of Khorezm architecture.
Although narrower than many older minarets in Central Asia, its height and graceful design make it one of the most visually striking monuments in Khiva. Visitors who climb to the top are rewarded with panoramic views of Itchan Kala, including its domes, mosques, and ancient city walls.
Today, the Islam Khoja Minaret remains one of the most photographed and visited sites in Khiva. It represents the artistic beauty, cultural heritage, and architectural sophistication of one of Uzbekistan’s most historic cities.
