Registan Square
Registan Square is the most famous landmark in Samarkand and one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture in the world. It served for centuries as the main public square and the cultural, commercial, and educational center of the city. The name “Registan” means “sandy place” in Persian, referring to its original role as an open gathering area.
The square is surrounded by three monumental madrasas built during different periods of the Timurid and later eras: Ulugh Beg Madrasa (15th century), Sher-Dor Madrasa (17th century), and Tilya-Kori Madrasa (17th century). Together, they form a perfectly balanced architectural ensemble that represents the peak of Central Asian design and artistic achievement.
Each madrasa has its own unique style. The Ulugh Beg Madrasa is known for its early, more scientific and educational purpose, while Sher-Dor Madrasa is famous for its tiger mosaics and bold artistic decoration. Tilya-Kori Madrasa stands out for its golden interior and richly decorated mosque, making the ensemble visually diverse yet harmonious.
Architecturally, Registan is characterized by its massive entrance portals (iwans), detailed tilework, geometric patterns, and striking blue domes. The square has been carefully restored over time, preserving its historical identity while allowing visitors to experience its original grandeur.
Today, Registan Square is the most visited tourist attraction in Uzbekistan and a symbol of Samarkand’s historical importance along the Silk Road. It hosts light shows, cultural events, and remains a powerful reminder of the city’s role as a center of science, culture, and architecture.
