Itchan Kala

Itchan Kala is the ancient walled inner city of Khiva and one of the best-preserved examples of Islamic architecture in Central Asia. Surrounded by massive mud-brick walls, the city served for centuries as the political, cultural, and commercial center of Khiva and was an important stop along the Silk Road.

The history of Itchan Kala dates back many centuries, with most of its major monuments built between the 18th and 19th centuries during the flourishing period of the Khiva Khanate. The city contains dozens of historical structures, including mosques, madrasas, palaces, mausoleums, caravanserais, and minarets, all located within a compact area that creates the feeling of an open-air museum.

Architecturally, Itchan Kala is famous for its narrow streets, monumental gates, turquoise domes, and richly decorated tilework. The massive defensive walls surrounding the city are among its most recognizable features, providing protection in the past and preserving the historical atmosphere of the city today.

Among the most notable landmarks inside Itchan Kala are Kalta Minor Minaret, the Kunya Ark Fortress, Juma Mosque, and several beautifully decorated madrasas that reflect the artistic traditions of Khorezm architecture.

In 1990, Itchan Kala became the first site in Uzbekistan to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its exceptional historical and cultural value.

Today, Itchan Kala remains one of the most visited tourist destinations in Uzbekistan. Walking through its ancient streets allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of a medieval Silk Road city preserved almost exactly as it appeared centuries ago.
